Visiting Spain from an EU country with dogs and cats.

To bring a dog and a cat into Spain, the pet must meet the following requirements:

  • Be identified with a microchip or tattoo (if done prior to 03/July/2011 and is still legible).
  • Be vaccinated against rabies with a current vaccine and have it included in your passport at the time of travel.
  • Possess a European pet passport. The sections “Owner,” “Description of the animal,” “Marking,” “Issuance of the passport,” and “Rabies vaccination” in the passport must be completed (see Annex I to the Instruction).
  • For movements from other Member States to Spain, the sections on “Serological test,” “Treatment against ticks,” “Treatment against Echinococcus,” “Other vaccinations,” “Clinical examination,” “Legalisation,” and “Others” are not required.

Dogs, cats, and ferrets under the age of 15 weeks and thus unvaccinated with a valid rabies vaccine are not permitted to enter Spain:

  • The minimum vaccination age is 12 weeks.
  • For the vaccine to be effective, at least 21 days must have passed since the vaccination date.

Pet birds brought into Spain from another EU country must be accompanied by a veterinary certificate in accordance with model INTRA-2, written at least in Spanish, and issued within the last 10 days.

Pet poultry (as defined in Directive 158/2009/EC) will never be considered.

The rules governing the movement of other animal species between EU member states are not harmonised at the EU level, so each country is free to set its own rules.
