NOLOTIL RESTRICTED FOR BRITISH TOURISTS

What you need to know about the popular pain drug following complications and deaths associated with the side effects of the medications in British patients.

Nolotil is a pain killer, an anti-inflammatory and anti-fever medication, commonly used around the world. Particularly in Spain, Portugal and Latin America.

It is Spain’s most sold medical drug and is marketed as an alternative to Ibuprofen or Paracetamol.

One of the major side effects is agranulocytosis, this causes the brain marrow to not produce enough white blood cells and can result in fatal blood poisoning. According to the Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices, the report of agranulocytosis is particularly filed within British patients.

Although there are no conclusive studies, many health specialists suspect people from Northern Europe including those of British origin are more at risk than people from Spain. The warning says that before the pain killer is prescribed, there should be a detailed look at the patients’ medical history including blood tests and its use should be avoided in those with risk factors.

The pain killer is not licensed in the UK and is banned in many countries, including the US, due to its potential for adverse effects. However, the painkiller remains widely prescribed in Spain and shows its use has doubled in the last 10 years.
