How is Halloween Celebrated in Spain?

How is Halloween Celebrated in Spain you may ask. Well we celebrate the continuity of life and honour the dead.

Halloween is coming with its celebrations and costumes, but in Spain the holiday is much more than just an event for children.

In fact, Halloween is known as El Dia de los Muertos (the day of the dead) and is considered to be a three-day event.

The first being on the 31st October an known as the Dia de las Brujas (day of the witches). Then comes on the 1st of November the Dia de todos los Santos (all saints day) and finally on the 2nd of October the Dia de Los Muertos (the day of the dead).

We are celebrating the continuity of life and honouring the dead by gathering around the graves of their ancestors with flowers, sharing food and drink.

Different provinces and parts of Spain follow different rituals within these three days. But throughout the country’s big cities and university towns you will always find clubs, bars and restaurants organizing events and costume parties.
