€35M will be distributed to restore the historical and cultural heritage of Spain

The Spanish Council of Ministers has announced that it will transfer approximately €35 million from the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Tourism’s budget to the Ministry of Culture and Sports to finance interventions for the maintenance and long-term rehabilitation of culturally significant real estate in several cities throughout the country.

Reyes Maroto, Minister of Industry, Trade, and Tourism, said that Spain has around 17,199 cultural assets dispersed over its land. So maintaining and restoring these assets would protect them and attract tourists who want to visit Spain.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Tourism, in the agreement signed in May between the Ministries of Industry, Trade, and Tourism and Culture and Sports, the latter will be responsible for the implementation of these ten projects in various cities.

The projects are all of cultural and tourist interest, with special significance for the cultural, environmental, and economic sustainability of the environments in which they are located.

The Spanish government also emphasized that, on the one hand, €15 million will be allocated for the reform and improvement of state museums and the transferred management of Cáceres and Tarragona, both listed as World Heritage under UNESCO.

Specifically, €7 million will be allocated to the Tarragona Museum and €8 million to the Cáceres Museum.

The castles that will be consolidated are Sagunto (Valencia), Adsubia (Alicante), and Santed (Zaragoza).

The government has set aside €15M for the Landscape of Light in Madrid, which was designated a World Heritage site last year. Meanwhile, €8.5 million will be invested in National Library rehabilitation initiatives.

At the same time, the government announced that €5M would be provided to the Museum of the National Art Center Reina Sofa (headquarters and Palacio de Velázquez-Parque del Retiro) for rehabilitation aid, and €1M to the National Museum of the Meadows.

Furthermore, historical history is unquestionably an important component of tourism in Spain. In this regard, it was found that around 14.5 million of the visits made in 2019 were for cultural purposes.
