Is it necessary to have civil liability insurance if I have a dog?
Yes, according to article 30.3 of the Animal Welfare Act, “In the case of dog ownership and throughout the life of the animal, the owner must take out and maintain in force civil liability insurance for damage to third parties, which includes in its coverage the persons responsible for the animal, for an amount sufficient to cover any possible expenses arising, which shall be established by regulation”.
What are the fines for not having this insurance?
It is possible to receive a light fine as long as no serious damage or injury is caused, otherwise the fines range from 500 to 10,000 Euros.
What other important aspects does the Animal Protection Law regulate?
Article 27 of the law states that “it is expressly forbidden to keep dogs and cats on terraces, balconies, roof terraces, lumber rooms, basements, courtyards and the like”. Keeping pets in these places on a regular basis will be punishable by fines of between 10,001 and 50,000 euros. This law also regulates the time that pets can be left alone at home: 24 hours for dogs and 72 hours for other pets, including cats.
