Young Person's Rental Bonus Extended: Are You Eligible for the €250 Monthly Aid?
The Spanish government has extended the Young Person’s Rental Bonus for the remainder of 2024 and all of 2025. If you’re under 35 and a mid-to-low income earner, you could benefit from this aid. Here’s what you need to know:
What is the Young Person’s Rental Bonus?
- Initially introduced in 2022, this scheme provides young renters with a monthly €250 subsidy for up to two years.
- The aim is to help young people in Spain move out of their parents’ homes and live independently.
- Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced €200 million in funding to continue the program.
Why is this bonus important?
- According to the Spanish Youth Council, only 16.3% of young people under 30 have moved out of their parents’ homes.
- With the average salary of people under 35, renters would need to spend up to 93.9% of their income on housing costs.
Eligibility Requirements To apply for the €250 monthly aid, you must meet the following criteria:
- Age: Between 18 and 35.
- Income: Must have a regular income that doesn’t exceed €24,318 per year or €2,026.50 gross per month (across 12 payments).
- Rent Cap: The rent must not exceed €600 per month (€300 for a room), although some regions may allow up to €900 or €450 for high-rent areas.
- Residency: You must live in the rented property and cannot sublet it. You also need to be a legal resident of Spain.
- Bank Account: You must have an active Spanish bank account.
Failure to meet any of these conditions will disqualify you from receiving the aid.
Who Cannot Apply?
- Property owners.
- Individuals living in properties owned by close family members.
How Much Can You Receive?
- A maximum of €250 per month for rent payments, which cannot be used for any other purpose.
Can You Combine this Aid with Other Benefits?
- Yes, the rental bonus is compatible with other state housing benefits from the 2022-2025 State Plan for Access to Housing.
- If you receive other subsidies, the total assistance will be capped at 75% of your rental cost.
What About Shared Apartments?
- You can apply even if you’re sharing a flat. Each eligible housemate can apply for the aid individually.
- For room rentals, the rent cap is €300, although regions can increase this to €450 if necessary.
How to Apply for the Rental Bonus
- Applications are managed regionally, so deadlines and processes may vary.
- You can apply in person at your local housing office or online using your Digital Certificate.
- Find your region’s application form through the official local government website, fill out the form, attach required documents (such as payslips and rental contracts), sign it, and submit.
