What do the Green Lines Mean ?

Why Green Lines Are Appearing on Roads in Spain: What Drivers Need to Know

Green lines have recently appeared on roads across Spain as part of a new safety initiative by the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT). These markings are designed to complement existing speed limit signs and serve as a visual cue to encourage drivers to reduce speed, particularly in areas prone to accidents. The initiative draws inspiration from similar measures implemented in other European countries.

The green lines are not replacing standard road signs but are intended to reinforce the importance of adhering to speed limits. By adding this visual element, the DGT aims to enhance driver awareness and reduce the likelihood of fatal collisions. This measure is part of a broader effort to improve road safety and decrease traffic-related fatalities in Spain.

In addition to green lines, the DGT has introduced red lines on certain high-risk roads. For example, on the A-357 in Málaga, a thick red line has been painted between lanes to emphasize the no-overtaking rule. This visual reinforcement has been effective in reducing accidents on that stretch of road. The DGT plans to expand the use of such markings to other dangerous roads across the country.

These initiatives reflect Spain’s commitment to adopting innovative strategies to enhance road safety and protect all road users.
