Upcoming V16 Safety Light Regulations for Vehicles in Spain

Starting January 1, 2026, Spain will mandate the use of V16 emergency lights in all vehicles, replacing the traditional warning triangles. This change, implemented by the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT), aims to enhance road safety by reducing the risks associated with roadside emergencies.

What Is a V16 Emergency Light?

The V16 is a compact, battery-powered beacon that emits a 360-degree flashing yellow light. Designed for placement on the vehicle’s roof, it allows drivers to signal emergencies without exiting the vehicle, thereby minimizing exposure to traffic hazards. Advanced models are equipped with geolocation technology that communicates the vehicle’s position to the DGT’s 3.0 platform in real-time, facilitating quicker emergency response.

Key Dates and Compliance
  • Until December 31, 2025: Both traditional warning triangles and V16 lights are permissible.

  • From January 1, 2026: Only DGT-approved V16 lights with geolocation capabilities will be legally accepted.

Non-compliance may result in fines ranging from €80 to €200.

Specifications for Approved V16 Devices

To ensure compliance, V16 devices must meet the following criteria:

  • Visibility: Emit a flashing yellow light visible from at least 1 kilometer.

  • Duration: Operate autonomously for a minimum of 30 minutes.

  • Weather Resistance: Function effectively under adverse weather conditions.

  • Connectivity: Integrate with the DGT 3.0 platform to transmit real-time location data.

  • Ease of Use: Allow placement on the vehicle’s roof without the need to exit the vehicle.

Drivers are advised to purchase certified V16 devices listed on the DGT’s official website to ensure compliance.

Recommendations for Motorists
  • Early Adoption: Acquiring a compliant V16 device before the 2026 deadline is advisable to avoid last-minute issues.

  • Regular Maintenance: Ensure the device’s battery is functional and replace it as needed to guarantee readiness during emergencies.

  • Proper Storage: Keep the V16 device within easy reach inside the vehicle, such as in the glove compartment, for swift access when needed.
