Spain Tests New 150 km/h Speed Limit Using AI
Spain is considering raising motorway speed limits, inspired by Germany’s autobahns, by testing a maximum speed of 150 km/h on selected roads. Currently, Spain’s motorways have a 120 km/h limit, but the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) is piloting an increased limit on a segment of motorway in Catalonia, controlled through artificial intelligence (AI).
Drivers on the AP-7 motorway near El Vendrell can now legally drive at speeds up to 150 km/h without facing penalties for exceeding the previous limit of 120 km/h, marking the first experiment of this kind in Spain.
AI technology will dynamically adjust speed limits in real-time based on various factors, including traffic density, weather conditions, road conditions, and time of day. Consequently, during specific periods, motorists could be permitted to drive faster than the usual maximum.
This innovative approach aims to enhance road safety, particularly during poor weather or near hazardous road sections, while simultaneously reducing congestion during peak travel hours.
The Spanish government seeks to emulate successful practices from other European countries like Germany and France, where AI-controlled speed regulation has been beneficial. Germany, for example, has reported fewer accidents during busy periods, while France employs variable speed limits effectively to combat sudden adverse weather conditions.
The European Union supports this initiative, indicating AI-managed speed limits can significantly decrease accidents, reduce CO2 emissions, and enhance fuel efficiency. Studies from the Netherlands reveal that intelligent speed regulation has successfully cut accident rates by as much as 30% in high-risk zones.
Nevertheless, implementing AI-managed speed limits comes with challenges. Potential confusion among drivers about appropriate speeds is a concern. Moreover, the reliability and continuous operation of AI systems are crucial to ensure safety.
Privacy and data management are also points of contention, as AI speed control relies on continuous monitoring of traffic and driver behavior. Some groups have raised concerns about how collected data may be utilized, including the possibility of automatic penalty enforcement.
The trial is currently limited to this specific motorway stretch in Catalonia. However, if deemed successful, Spain may expand the AI-driven speed limit system nationwide.
