We have great news for foreign residents and newcomers in Spain! From June 2025, the Spanish government will implement a new system that allows foreign nationals to exchange their driving licence entirely online—a welcome change that simplifies a previously time-consuming and paperwork-heavy process.

✅ What’s Changing?

Under the current system, anyone wanting to exchange their foreign driving licence for a Spanish one must book an appointment with the DGT (Dirección General de Tráfico) and appear in person, submitting a range of documents and often waiting weeks or even months for processing.

With the new digital procedure:

• The entire process will be managed online through the DGT’s website.

• Applicants will upload all required documents and complete formalities digitally.

• The physical visit will only be required to hand over the original foreign licence and collect the Spanish one—a significant reduction in in-person bureaucracy.

🌍 Who Can Benefit?

This new online system is aimed at nationals from countries that already have reciprocal agreements with Spain, including:

• The United Kingdom

• Most Latin American countries

• South Korea

• Japan

• And others listed by the DGT

📋 What Documents Will You Need?

Although the process will move online, you’ll still need to prepare the standard documentation, including:

• Proof of identity (passport/NIE)

• Proof of residence in Spain

• Medical fitness certificate (as required)

• The original driving licence and its translation if necessary
