New £16 ETA Required to EU Travel to the UK

Remember as of the 2nd April 2025, nationals of EU and EFTA countries (including Spain) must obtain a UK (ETA) before traveling to the United Kingdom.
✅ Who needs the ETA?
  • Travelers holding passports from EU/EFTA countries, except Ireland

  • Individuals with EU nationality with a British spouse

  • Children and infants also require their own ETA

  • Non-visa-free travelers (e.g. Indian, Chinese passport holders) still require a standard UK visa, not the ETA

🗓 Timeline & Fees
  • Applications opened on 5 March 2025

  • Requirement applies from 2 April 2025

  • Cost: £16 per ETA (increased from previous £10 rate) EuropeGOV.UK

  • Valid for multiple entries over two years or until passport expiry (whichever comes first)

🚫 Exceptions & Key Details
  • Citizens traveling on Irish passports (due to the Common Travel Area) are exempt

  • UK visa holders or residents (e.g. Settled / Pre‑Settled Status) do not need an ETA

  • Transit-only passengers who remain in the airport may be exempt, though rules have evolved with industry feedback.

📝 Application Guidance
  • Apply via the official UK government website or the UK ETA app

  • Applications are processed within three working days on average, although delays may happen during peak periods.

  • Beware of third-party sites charging significantly more—always apply through gov.uk

⚖️ Legal Perspective from SGM Abogados
For EU clients planning short visits to the UK—whether for tourism, business, or family stays of up to six months—the ETA is now mandatory. The £16 fee applies uniformly, even if the passport is renewed during the ETA validity period.

For dual-national individuals or families with mixed EU/UK citizenship, it is essential to travel using the appropriate passport to avoid complications. Our office can assist in determining the right documentation strategy for travel and compliance.
