Ireland Abolish 100ml Liquid Rule

Irish Airports to Abolish 100ml Liquids Restriction

Ireland’s Shannon airport has abolished the 100ml restriction on liquids in traveller hand luggage, the airport’s authorities have confirmed. Such a rule that has been kept in place since 2006 as a preventive measure against terrorism has often caused difficulties for travellers, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

In addition, authorities in Ireland have confirmed that the recent changes will be applied in all Irish airports after the carry-on liquids would no longer be limited to 100ml due to the new passenger security system.

Such a new rule permits passengers at Shannon to bring whatever liquids they require without being subject to restrictions on bottle size as long as they are stored within their cabin baggage.

The recent rules are planned to be applied not only in Ireland’s airports but also in airports in countries worldwide, according to the travel expert Eoghan Corry.

According to him, “what has changed is the technology… four or five companies have been upping the level of technology all the time.” He stressed that they are aspiring to a situation where it won’t be needed to take laptops and liquids out of bags.

According to a travel expert, a larger number of airports will follow the example of Shannon Airport.

The 100ml restriction on liquids was introduced in 2006 after Intelligence Services revealed a plot to blow up many airlines over the Atlantic Ocean. The targeted flights were leaving from Heathrow Airport, in London, with destinations across North American countries.

The plotters of the bomb had planned to smuggle the items needed for the explosive devices through airport security.

Back then, the Guardian Newspaper reported that the components were disguised as drinks, while the plan was to assemble the devices onboard the aircraft.

Soon after the plot was uncovered, the governments and aviation authorities imposed new rules in order to prevent a similar incident, thus introducing a restriction on the size of the liquids.
