Authorities in Spain together with the European Commission have introduced a proposal to keep the Gibraltar land border open, according to a recent report by Reuters.
The same notes that such a decision has been taken as part of efforts to find a definite solution to settling the post-Brexit status of the enclave, according to the Spanish Foreign Ministry, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
On December 31, 2020, authorities in Spain, the United Kingdom and the European Union reached an agreement that Gibraltar would remain part of EU agreements, such as the borderless area of Schengen.
In this regard, the Foreign Affairs Minister, Jose Manuel Albares, told local authorities in Spain that both Spain and the European Commission addressed a proposal to the United Kingdom in order to make Gibraltar a zone of shared prosperity.
In addition, the British ambassador in Madrid Hugh Elliot emphasized that he was confident an agreement regarding the issue can be made this year.
The Spanish EU proposal includes lifting the fence in order to ensure the free movement of people between Spain as well as the enclave, according to the statement published by the same Ministry.
“This requires Spain to take control, on behalf of the Schengen area, of Gibraltar’s external borders and, to this end, to be able to exercise certain functions and powers necessary to protect the integrity and security of the Schengen area,” it noted.
Previously, the Minister of Tourism and Business of Gibraltar, Vijay Daryanyani, said that Gibraltar could become part of the Schengen Zone by the end of this year.
